Former NFL QB Tim Tebow Engaged to Former Miss Universe

Former NFL quarterback and minor league outfielder for the New York Mets Tim Tebow just popped the question to his girlfriend, a former Miss Universe, and she said ‘yes.’ After years of ridicule of his decision to stay pure until marriage, it would seem that God honored his obedience by picking the perfect woman for Tebow: Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters.

How They Met

Tebow, 31, and Nel-Peters, 23, met through Tebow’s Night to Shine, which is part of the Tim Tebow Foundation. Night to Shine annually hosts a prom night for special needs kids. Nel-Peters’ sister has a disability.

“Her sister has special needs, so we invited them to Night to Shine in South Africa,” Tebow told the TODAY Show’s Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb. “We kind of met and started talking through that and haven’t stopped.”

Tebow tweeted about their engagement Thursday. “@demileighnp Thank you for saying YES and making me the happiest man in the world. You’re the love of my life, and I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you.” Tebow gave Nel-Peters a 7.25-carat solitare ring.

United in Faith

Last year Tebow told People Magazine that his ideal woman would share his faith. “They have to really love God. My faith is important to me — it’s the most important thing — and I need to be with someone who also shares that faith.”

Like Tebow, Nel-Peters has been outspoken about her faith. She recently posted to Instagram that “all the glory goes to my Heavenly Father and savior, Jesus Christ” for her blessings in 2018. “I am forever grateful for [all] the experiences He has blessed me with in my life.”

#Unbreakable

Nel-Peters isn’t simply a former Miss Universe. She’s a business-minded woman as well. She received her bachelor’s degree in business management from North-West University in South Africa. She admires women like Marissa Mayer, the first female engineer at Yahoo. Mayer then went on to become the CEO of Yahoo. She looks up to “women who don’t only strive to be the equals of men, but who strive to live up to their full potential.”

Tebow’s fiancée also started a campaign called #Unbreakable. #Unbreakable aims to empower “women around the world with skills and knowledge on how to prevent or handle abusive and violent situations.” She began the campaign in 2017. “Becoming Miss Universe made me realize that women worldwide face the same challenges daily, such as various forms of violence and crime, physical and emotional abuse, and toxic relationships, among others.”

“My hope is that Unbreakable will inspire women to believe in themselves, to value themselves and to know that asking for help does not mean you are weak,” she added. “Most importantly, I hope that Unbreakable will not only teach women life-saving skills and knowledge on how to handle unwanted situations but also helps them realize that if we as women take hands and stand together, we are Unbreakable.”

There’s no word on a wedding date yet.
